How do I know if Freemasonry is right for me?
Look to your heart.

We admit it: we’re prejudiced. We think that being a Mason is as about a good and noble a calling as there is. But the truth of the matter is that the Craft isn’t for everyone. Just because you meet the minimum requirements for requesting membership (listed above), it doesn’t automatically mean that you will enjoy or get very much out of being a Mason. Here are some questions that may help you decide whether or not you should consider embarking upon the Masonic journey:

1. Do I honor Truth and live my life accordingly? Am I consistently honest with myself and with others? Do I say what I mean and mean what I say?

2. Am I reliable? Do I keep my promises and fulfill my commitments? Do I usually finish what I start?

3. Do I lead a balanced life? Do I avoid extremes of thought and habit? Do I have control over my emotions?

4. Do I like and trust people? Do I acknowledge the inherent worth and dignity of every human being, and act accordingly? Do I treat everyone I meet with respect?

5. Do I regularly practice discretion? Do I think before I act or speak? Can I be trusted not to broadcast information given to me in confidence?

6. Do I have the support and confidence of the people closest to me? Are they willing to give me the “space” I will need to pursue my Masonic interests? Do they have a positive opinion of Freemasonry?

7. Do I ever wonder? Do I often marvel at the sheer beauty and majesty of Creation? Do I frequently ponder life’s meaning and my place in the greater scheme of things?

8. Am I willing to stretch beyond my “comfort zone”? Do I have the courage to become someone better than I am today? Will I put in the time needed to study and practice the lessons that Masonry teaches?

Don’t be discouraged if you can’t shout “Hell, yeah!” in answer to every single question. Few can. However, if you’ve racked up more Noes than Yeses, then you might want to rethink the whole Mason thing.

If, on the other hand, you discovered that, in the main, you have the proper mindset, the chances are good that you’ll find Freemasonry a worthwhile – and, maybe, a life changing -- venture. If you’d like to investigate this possibility further, we’d be more than happy to speak with you about it. Just send us an email and one of our Lodge Brothers will contact you shortly.
How do I apply for membership? Isn’t membership by “invitation only”?
One of Freemasonry’s most important rules states that no man may join a Masonic Lodge unless he chooses to do so freely. In other words, Masons are prohibited from pressuring, inducing, or otherwise coercing anyone into applying for membership. Consequently, no one is ever invited to join the Masons. So, if you’re waiting for someone to walk up and ask you to join, you’re going to have an awfully long wait.

Masons believe that every important undertaking requires effort. A journey of a thousand miles may indeed begin with a single step, but if you aren’t willing to take it, you won’t get very far. If you want to be a Mason, then you have to make the first move.

You begin by seeking out Masons in your circle of acquaintances and speaking to them about your desire to learn about the fraternity. This may not be so hard as you might think. In fact, you may already know
(or even be related to) several Masons and not be aware of it. Masons often hide in plain sight. While few shout their affiliation from the rooftop, many Masons wear jewelry (rings, lapel pins, and tie clips are the most common) that subtly display the distinctive Square & Compasses symbol (you’ll find examples of this symbol on this and other Masonic websites). License plate frames and bumper stickers are also places you’ll find the Square & Compasses. Ask around – you may be pleasantly surprised.

Alternately, you may contact us at Naurashank Lodge directly, either by email or by calling one of the Lodge Officers. We don’t bite and will be happy to answer your questions the best we can.
